Do Morning People Always Succeed?

People who start their day early may have more chances to find good opportunities. But does being a morning person always lead to success? Hal Elrod, in his book The Miracle Morning, says that waking up early to exercise, study, or read before starting the day can lead to a successful life.

However, looking at successful people in history, not all of them were morning people. Former U.S. President Barack Obama, Charles Darwin, who founded the theory of evolution, and Thomas Edison, the famous inventor, were all night owls. The idea that morning people are more diligent and have a higher chance of success is just a common belief, not a fact.

Why Do People Emphasize Mornings?

Before the invention of the light bulb, the sun controlled human life. For thousands of years, humans lived according to the natural clock of sunrise and sunset. People had to work during the day and sleep at night. But when the light bulb was invented, everything changed. People could now stay active late into the night. However, this invention is less than 200 years old, and it has not completely changed the human body’s natural rhythm.

For example, studies show that the body releases the most growth hormones between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. while sleeping. This proves that our biological clock still works the same way as it did in the past. Waking up early may have some benefits, but there is no strong proof that night owls are more likely to fail. In fact, some studies suggest that being a night owl might even be better.

Smart Night Owls

Nowadays, many people start their day late but still enjoy a productive life. For them, the idea that "everyone should be a morning person" does not make sense. So how are night owls different from morning people? The main difference is that night owls usually start their daily routine about three hours later than morning people. Other than that, their lifestyles are quite similar. Interestingly, some studies show that night owls are actually smarter than morning people.

Satoshi Kanazawa, a researcher at the London School of Economics, studied the sleep patterns and IQ of about 12,000 university students from 1994 to 2002. His research found that night owls had higher IQs and better academic performance. The study also suggested that night owls tend to be more creative and active. So, the belief that morning people are more successful may need to change. Maybe one day, people will say, “The late bird is smarter and catches the worm better.”
