Sleep to Strengthen Brain Learning
The Korean CSAT (수능) is coming soon. The test score is the result of 12 years of hard work. As the test day gets closer, students feel more nervous and impatient. Many students reduce their sleep time to study more. But does sleeping less really help? No, it doesn’t. Lack of sleep lowers learning efficiency. Sleep helps the brain store information for a long time. So, students should stop thinking that studying more by sleeping less is a good idea. Instead, getting quality sleep is the best way to improve learning.
Guide to Good Sleep
1. Sleep at a fixed time
Many students come home late after school and academy classes. They feel tired but don’t get enough rest. This makes their bodies and minds exhausted. It is better to set a fixed sleep time, from midnight to 6 AM. A regular sleep schedule helps the brain rest properly and absorb information better.
2. Sleep at least 7–9 hours a day
Some students think, “If I sleep a lot, I won’t have enough time to study.” So, they reduce sleep time. But the brain needs rest to focus well. A tired brain cannot study effectively. Don’t stay in a half-awake state, feeling anxious without really studying. Top students plan their sleep wisely. Many of them sleep at least 7 hours a day.
3. Keep the bedroom cool for better sleep
Experts say it takes about 30 minutes to fall into deep sleep. A good sleep environment is important. Research shows that temperature affects sleep more than light. The best room temperature for sleep is around 18°C. If the room is too hot or too cold, sleep quality decreases. A comfortable temperature helps students sleep deeply and study better.
4. Recognize the bed as a sleeping place
When you lie down in bed, only sleep. Do not use your phone or do other activities in bed. If you use the bed for other things, your brain won’t recognize it as a sleeping place. A brain that links the bed with sleep can fall asleep faster. Babies sleep well in their mother’s arms because they associate warmth and a heartbeat with comfort.
5. Think about the day before sleeping
Avoid using your phone before sleeping. Instead, close your eyes and recall the day’s events in order. This helps your brain store memories. Studies show that reviewing information before sleep helps with long-term memory. This is why words memorized before sleeping stay longer in the brain than words memorized in the morning.
Don’t cut your sleep time! Reducing sleep to study more lowers your test score.
Sleeping well is the key to better learning and better grades.
