Komalatammal's Dedication to Ramanujan's Education

Komalatammal (Komala Tammal) was the mother of Srinivasa Ramanujan, the renowned Indian mathematician. She raised her son in the small town of Erode, India, in poor conditions, but recognized his exceptional talent in mathematics. Ramanujan became famous for his deep research on natural numbers, infinite series, continued fractions, and more. His mathematical genius was primarily self-taught, and his contributions have had a significant impact on modern mathematics. Let’s explore how Komalatammal’s parenting helped shape the great mathematician Ramanujan.

Emotional stability through a mother’s unwavering belief

Komalatammal played a crucial role in the life and career of Srinivasa Ramanujan. From a young age, when Ramanujan showed a passion for mathematics, she provided him with unwavering support despite their dire financial circumstances. Ramanujan, who had little formal education, was able to achieve academic growth thanks to his mother’s belief and support. Sigmund Freud, often regarded as the father of modern psychology, once said that the emotional anchor for a child is often the mother. Freud argued that a child can grow into a fully independent person with the absolute belief of their mother. Similarly, Ramanujan thrived in his difficult environment and grew into a great mathematician under his mother’s steadfast support.

Drawing mathematical inspiration from faith

Komalatammal was a deeply religious woman with strong faith. She taught Ramanujan how to connect with God. Through his mother, Ramanujan developed a deep belief in the presence and inspiration of the divine, and it is said that he regarded his mathematical discoveries as gifts from God. Their shared faith created a strong bond between them. When the British mathematician G. H. Hardy from Oxford received a letter from Ramanujan, he invited the young Indian to England. When Ramanujan made the decision to go to England to study mathematics, Komalatammal initially opposed the idea. However, she was eventually persuaded when Ramanujan explained that it was the will of God. She emphasized to her son the importance of maintaining his religious beliefs and principles while in England, and Ramanujan followed her advice, drawing much inspiration from his faith. His decision to go to England marked a turning point in his mathematical career, enabling him to make significant strides and eventually be recognized as one of history’s greatest mathematicians.

Ramanujan, who never received formal education, was a poor Indian mathematician who became a self-made, renowned figure in mathematics. He earned his fame through his mother's unwavering belief and support, which allowed him to rise to greatness.
