Focusing Too Much on Friendships Can Make You Lose Sight of Your Goals

People who are kind and have many friends often try to make everyone happy. Because of this, their friendships can become complicated. These people can bring comfort to others, but they may find it hard to teach strong morals.

Parents may praise their children for having good friendships and getting along with others.

However, if children care too much about what their friends think, they may not focus on themselves. They might change their opinions based on what others think and lose confidence in making their own choices. Trying too hard to fit in can make them lose sight of their goals.

They may end up doing things they don’t want to do just because their friends do them. Sometimes, this means following friends to good opportunities, but other times, it can lead to bad decisions. So, how should parents guide their children in such situations?

Check If Friendships Affect Your Child’s Studies

Parents should be careful about interfering in their child's friendships. First, they need to check if their child's studies are affected by friends. For example, if a child does not do their homework and says it is because their friends also didn’t do it, this is something to discuss. The child may think it is okay not to do homework just because others didn’t do it.

In this case, parents should ask why their child believes they don’t need to do homework. It is important to listen to the child’s thoughts rather than just saying they are wrong. If parents force their opinions, the child may stop talking about their friends in the future. Instead, ask if following their friends’ actions is the right choice. Also, ask why they don’t follow the actions of friends who do their homework.

If a child shows a strong tendency to follow close friends, it is better to change the environment rather than cut off friendships. Parents can encourage their child to attend a different academy or spend more time with friends who study well.

Help Your Child Build Their Own Study Style Instead of Just Following Friends

Children who value friendships may show great improvement if they have hardworking friends. Their study habits can change a lot depending on their friends. However, parents should help them develop their own way of studying rather than just following others. Children should understand their strengths and weaknesses by themselves.

Encourage your child to take the lead instead of always following. Tell them to find a study method that works best for them and let their friends follow their way. When children succeed in their own way, they gain confidence, and their study performance improves.

It is best to help them find their study style before middle school. In high school, parents have less time to guide them, and when they go to college, parental influence becomes even smaller. Parents should help their children discover their strengths early and learn to achieve results on their own.

One good method is to set a three-month goal. Let your child plan monthly and weekly steps to reach their goal. Parents can also set their own goals and work together with their child. This can create healthy competition and keep both the parent and the child motivated.
